Politicians have met key figures as efforts continue to save the closure-threatened Pinneys seafood factory.

Young’s Seafood has announced plans to shut down the site in Annan, Dumfries and Galloway, putting 450 jobs at risk.

Scottish secretary David Mundell and Scottish Government business minister Paul Wheelhouse both met Young’s chief executive Bill Showalter yesterday as it was announced the company has been put up for sale.

Mr Wheelhouse told MSPS on Tuesday several parties have expressed an interest.

After the meeting he said: “I believe it would be importantforthecompany to keep their options open regarding the potential for a buyer of Youngs Seafood, and potentially Pinney’s factory in Annan as part of that purchase.”

Mr Mundell also met the chief executive of Dumfries and Galloway Council to discuss opportunities for encouraging potential buyers. The Scottish secretary is also planning a meeting with Marks and Spencer, a key stakeholder in the Pinneys site.
