Stepping in: Special forces move in to break up antigovernment protest

Armenian special forces detained opposition supporters during a rally in front of the entrance to government headquarters in Armenian capital Yerevan.

Police arrested dozens of anti-government demonstrators on the seventh day of large-scale protests against ex-president Serzh Sargsyan‘s election as prime minister.

Led by opposition MP Nikol Pashinyan, hundreds of protesters attempted to blockade the entrance before riot police intervened. Protesters have held rallies to denounce Mr Sargsyan’s efforts to remain in power under a new system of government.
