Spanish own goal

-

The former Catalan president, Artur Mas, has told Nicola Sturgeon that support from Scotland (more accurately, from the SNP) for Catalonia’s right to self-determination would “not be forgotten”.

He is absolutely correct: The government of Spain will never forget it and will ensure that, should there ever be an independent Scotland, Spain would ensure that any attempt to join the EU would be firmly vetoed.

DAVID K ALLAN Hopper Gardens, Edinburgh, A former Catalonian president who ran an illegal referendum several years ago is in Edinburgh to thank the Scottish Government for its support of the lecturer who is facing extradition, and all the other arrested leaders.

Nicola Sturgeon is a lawyer. That alone should mean obeying the law. Her government bring in laws we abide by or we face the consequences. The repeal of her football law brought on apopletic rage from the SNP. The Catalonian parliament broke Spanish law on the holding of referendums, yet the SNP applaud this. We live by laws and praising the breaking of certain ones for nationalistic means is unacceptable. Artur Mas is thanking the Scottish government. Many law abiding citizens must hope it does not mean the Scottish people.
