A blight blows in

-

I read with incredulity, the SSE proposal to enlarge an unsightly, pumped-hydro scheme planned for Coire Glas, above Loch Lochy. It would supposedly “soakup” excess power from wind farms and pump water uphill. demonstrates perfectly how useless SSE’S wind farms are at providing constant, reliable energy as and when required. Windfarms are already visible from more than 60 per cent of Scotland, yet hundreds more are being plonked in our Moray Firth – and still they can’t produce the goods!

Pumped storage is by definition NOT renewable energy!

Might I also point out that our tides have been pumping vast quantities of water uphill for millions of years, twice a day, without the need for any giant bird-mincers, or ruined landscapes.

Coire Glas is a glorious, scenic, romantic, Scottish landscape directly above the Great Glen Way and the Caledonian Canal. This really is the beating heart of our tourist industry and ought not to be industrialised because of an ill-thought-out energy policy. The Great Glen should be a Unesco World Heritage Site and its scenic grandeur permanently protected for us and our children to inherit. GEORGE HERRAGHTY Lothlorien, Lhanbryde
