London Marathon

-

The Queen is the official starter for this year’s edition of the London Marathon, albeit remotely as she will be at Windsor Castle, while the tens of thousands of athletes preparing to run 26.2 miles will be in Blackheath.

In the men’s elite race Sir Mo Farah makes his first marathon appearance since retiring from the track and switching his focus to full-time road racing. His rivals include defending champion Daniel Wanjiru of Kenya, his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge – who is the favourite to win and Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele. Mary Keitany starts as favourite to win the women’s race for a fourth time and she is targeting Paula Radcliffe’s world record as well.

Away from the elites there will be stories aplenty of those for whom simply finishing is a massive achievement.
