Scots rule of law
In her rush to criticise the Scottish Government for giving moral support to Catalonians who were denied an independence referendum, Doris Duff (Letters, 20 April), suggests that Nicola Sturgeon is not supporting the rule of law in Spain.
I believe that the duty of the Scottish Government is to uphold the rule of law in Scotland. No suggestion has been made by any member of the Scottish Government that Professor Clara Ponsatí should not face the extradition proceedings brought by the Spanish authorities.
If the Scottish courts should order that Professor Ponsati be extradited, then I am sure that neither Nicola Sturgeon nor any member of her government would oppose the order. Similarly, it would be unthinkable for either the Scottish or the UK government to extradite Prof Ponsati on the basis of her alleged infringement of Spanish law without having gone through due process in Scotland.
As ms duff states :“we live by laws and praising the breaking of certain ones for nationalistic means is unacceptable.”
Breaking Scots laws for Spanish ‘nationalist means’ is indeed unacceptable.
