Guess what – stress and anxiety are how we learn to deal with stress and anxiety. Being set tests is how we learn to strive and to improve. Having to cross a road is how we learn to cross the road.

Arch Stainton It is an appalling idea to test children in this way. Many children are simply not ready at 5 for academic education, for a huge variety of reasons. When these children are tested and fail, it sets their education back for their entire life, which affects their entire career and usually ends up in more resources need to be directed towards them during school and afterwards. Utter tosh and total balderdash! Learning to manage anxiety and stress is all part of growing up successfully. Should we abandon driving tests for ‘anxious’ candidates?

Graeme Paul This analysis by these “experts” will be well received by the SNP. Under Curriculum for Excellence they have designed an education system where thousands of youngsters in Scotland never sit a serious test. All examinations below National 5 (name still makes me cringe!) have no external assessment!

Proud Scot Human intelligence and learning ability is the same now as it was in Roman times. Introducing stress at several points in a pupil’s life prepares them for the stresses of life.‘learning with joy’ is a similar disaster to learning through play. Pupils in the Far East learn more and faster than we do and guess what? Their methods involved more and targeted testing.

Corrigenda Absolute bonkers. No child should need to be ‘tested’ at 5 or 6 years old unless a teacher suspects that a child is struggling for some unknown reason, and even then it should be done sympathetically.
