James Stevenson (Letters, 24 April) thinks that we can judge the mindset of the 21st-century Spanish Government by its 16th-century version having imposed an Inquisitio­n.

In Scotland in the 17th century our government hanged a teenager for blasphemy and well into the 18th century was still burning hapless old women for the crime of witchcraft. Should we, from this, make any inference about the current Scottish Government? (DR) A MCCORMICK,
