Take a look at the photograph of Mr Macron on the front of yesterday’s Scotsman. Did you ever in your life see such a forced, phoney expression?

With all the hugging, kissing and hand holding, Mr Macron has ventured a little too deeply into toe-curling territory for the preservation of selfrespect. Mr. Trump will lap up all the Gallic fawning, but I doubt if he will be impressed, and I wonder what the French man in the rue will make of it? GRAHAM M MCLEOD Muirs, Kinross
