Grimley eyes his third title of the year as he progresses in Croatia

- By LORNA CARMICHAEL

0 Christopher Grimley: Won match in only 27 minutes. Christopher Grimley has reached the third round of the Valamar Junior Open in the Croatia by defeating French opponent Cyprien Samson.

The Scot, who is seeded third in the competition, received a bye into round two, and wasted little time showing his capabilities, prevailing in straight games to progress in only 27 minutes.

Yet with Spain’s Joan Monroy on the other side of the net next up, the 18-year-old knows he cannot take his foot off the gas in order to add to his Swedish Junior and Hellas Junior International titles from 2018 so far.

“I’m feeling good and off to a good start here in Croatia,” he said.

“I played well against the French player and hopefully I can continue to play well but against a Spanish boy tomorrow it should be more difficult.”

Before Grimley’s attentions turned to Monroy, Samson laid down a useful challenge for the teenager – one which he confidently met.

In less than half an hour the victory was secured, with the first game a solid 21-10 scoreline in favour of the Scot. His French opponent threatened to level the match in the second game but, in truth, Grimley always looked in command with his form in the calendar year so far not slowing down. That was duly reflected in a 21-15 second game.

Grimley is now looking to make the most of his thirdseed status by building a long run at the tournament in Dubrovnik.
