But those buyers who are looking to move up a step also have to carefully consider their budgets.
According to a poll by Nationwide Building Society, so-called second-steppers are just as likely to compromise on luxuries in order to focus on the fundamentals of the property they would like to buy.
While most are happy to forgo nights out and weekends away to afford their new home, and to do without extras such as a conservatory, garage or private driveway to afford the right property, the things they are least likely to strike off their wishlist are a dream kitchen or bathroom and the desired number of bedrooms.
Walker Group has responded to the poll by suggesting that those with an eye for high-spec kitchens and plenty of bedrooms should look to the Canterbury house type at its Glen Ora development in North Berwick. The house comes with an envyinducing kitchen, a luxurious bathroom and four goodsized bedrooms.
