SCOTS CITIES AMONG UK’S WORST FOR CONGESTION

-

Three Scottish cities have earned the dubious honour of being among the most congested in the UK.

Aberdeen and Edinburgh were ranked third and fifth respectively, with Glasgow in 11th.

The miserable conditions for drivers in the cities were revealed in analysis of Department for Transport data carried out by price comparison website Go Compare.

The study found, unsurprisngly, that London was Britain’ s most congested city, with drivers wasting 73 hours a year stuck in traffic.

Manchester was second in the league table at 39 lost hours per year, with Ab erdo ni ans suffering 35 hours of traffic-bound misery and those in Edinburgh 31. Glasgwegians got off relatively lightly, sacr if icy 27 hours per year to the gods of jams, diversions and roadworks.

Beyond the city limits Scottish drivers didn’ t fare quite so badly, with A-road congestion less than that experienced elsewhere in the country.

The A1 was Scotland’s worst road. Two stretch es accounted for five of the worst congestion spots as the north bound and southbound carriage ways were treated separately. On the worst stretch–between the A6105 and A1167 – only a third of journeys were completed on time.

The three most congested A-roads in the UK were all in the northeast of England, while Wales had four of the top 10 most congested A-roads. Drivers in Scotland have thebes to fit, with 63.8 percent of journey son Scotland’ s busiest A-road completed on time, according to the figures.

Since 2015 delays have been recorded based on the percentage of additional journey time required, compared with how long a journey would take in freeflowing traffic.

On average, journeys in 2017 during peak times required an additional 67.7 percent of time compared with free - flowing traffic.

A spokesman for Go Compare Van Insurance said: “There are more cars on the road now than ever before, with an estimated increase in motor vehicles of eight per cent this decade alone and 17 per cent since the turn of the millennium.

“The fact that drivers in the worst congested 15 cities in the United Kingdom spend an average of 33 hours in traffic per person, per year, is indicative of just how bloated our roads can get.”
