Gut
There’s plenty happening in Scottish theatre this week, from Birnam to the Beacon at Greenock; but theatregoers around Edinburgh shouldn’t miss Frances Poet’s extraordinary and intense play Gut, at the Traverse for another week. Directed with terrific elegance and economy by Zinnie Harris, and featuring an unforgettable performance from George Anton as the man who represents both threat and friend, Poet’s brilliant script about the dilemmas of parenthood speaks relentless truths about the dangers of a society driven by fear of other people, rather than a presumption of goodwill; and leaves audiences discussing the questions it raises, long after the story ends. Traverse Theatre Edinburgh, until 12 May, 0131-228 1404; then Tron Theatre, Glasgow, 15-19 May, 0141-552 4267
