Dogs used to check air cargo for explosives

- By NEIL LANCEFIELD

Explosives detection dogs have been introduced at British airports to screen cargo.

Each animal has undergone 12 months of rigorous training to be able to detect minute traces of explosives, the Department for Transport (DFT) said.

They are being deployed in airport cargo sheds to provide a mobile and quick way of screening large volumes of freight alongside existing methods.

A “robust programme” is in place to maintain their detection capabilities, according to the DFT.

Aviation minister Baroness Sugg said: “The ability of these highly-skilled dogs to detect small amounts of vapour from explosives hidden in cargo will bolster our existing rigorous security methods.”

Dogs are already used at UK airports to help police identify criminals and prevent illegal activity.
