Queen’s Park relegated as Stenhousemuir and Peterhead march into play-off final

- By CRAIG P STEWART

Queen’s Park were relegated to League 2 on Saturday after a 2-1 play-off semi-final defeat by Stenhousemuir and defender Ross Millen was kept in hospital for more than 24 hours after being knocked unconscious during the match.

The 23-year-old was hit in the face by a clearance from team-mate Gerry Mclauchlanandslumpedtotheground before medical staff and a firstaid crew rushed to his aid.

He was taken to hospital before the game was finished and admitted into a specialist ward at Glasgow’s Southern General.

Head coach Gus Macpherson said: “Ross is receiving the best possible care and that has included getting a scan. He is set to go through some more tests which everyone is hoping is just a precautionary measure.”

Mark Mcguigan headed the visitors into an early lead but Mclaughlan dived to head in an equaliser four minutes from the break. Millen’s injury happened 17 minutes from the end and Harry Paton opened up the hosts’ recast defence to set up Mcguigan to slide in the winner.

The 3-2 aggregate score relegated Macpherson’s side and he added: “The result was disappointing but that is for discussion at a later time.”

The Warriors will meet Peterhead in the final after the Blue Toon defeated Stirling for an overall 4-0 success.

Mcguigan said: “Peterhead are a good team but we have done well against them this season. Hopefully we can keep that up in the final.” Peterhead built on Wednesday night’s 1-0 win over the Forthbank side seven minutes from the break when Mason Robertson headed in from a corner. Jim Mcinally’s side put the tie out of reach on 57 minutes. Rory Mcallister, pictured, netted from the edge of the box, with Jason Brown completing the scoring eight minutes later.

Peterhead boss Mcinally said: “It took us a bit of time to settle and Stirling had a couple of opportunities. Once we came through that we looked solid and Mason’s goal settled everybody down.”

Stirling manager Dave Mackay said: “Peterhead took their opportunities and we didn’t. That proved to be the difference.”
