Maclean 31, 40, 56; Anderson 36; Mcmillan (81) show how good he is.” Steven Anderson was also on target as Saints sprang into life just after the half-hour mark and won the game with a threegoal burst in nine minutes. The victory moved them level on points with seventh-placed Motherwell in the Ladbrokes Premiership and cut the Steelmen’s goal advantage to two.

“There were a lot of positives,” Wright said. “Macca will quite rightly get the headlines but [Jason] Kerr has been getting better and better with every game.

“I look at young [Alistair] Mccann coming on at 18, he is strong and good on the ball. [Matty] Willock and [George] Williams are looking like two good players for us.

“We felt, if we dealt with Motherwell’s directness and physicality, that we could always outplay them, and we did that.

“Some of the football was probably the best we had played all season.” Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson rested Cedric Kipre and Richard Tait as he began to rotate his squad ahead of the William Hill Scottish Cup final, but his whole team was struck by uncharacteristic defensive sloppiness.

“Richard Tait does spark us at times but the boys I’ve brought in have been boys that have started, bar young Barry Maguire, and played a lot of football for us,” Robinson said. “So it wasn’t like we made wholesale changes.

“It’s not often we have 13 or 14 players that don’t perform to any kind of level or intensity for us.

“You have days like these, this is the first time I have had one in 36 games. We’ll put it right.”
