Glasgow Hawks retained their place in the top tier of Scottish club rugby after defeating challengers Jed-forest in the BT Premiership play-off at Hawthornden in what was a distressingly one-sided decider.
“We are still part of the Scottish Premiership at this stage. We have a number of issues to address over the next two weeks in relation to our future – what it is and where it is,” said Hawks president Kenny Hamilton afterwards.
The Anniesland side, still seething from what they regard as an ill-thought Super Six snub, had a statement to make and did so spectacularly by totally out-gunning a Jedforest side that, for the most part, was shut out of the game.
Hawks dominated the setpiece and retained the ball well. Moreover, Hawks were disciplined in their play, in contrast to Jed, whose backrow Darren Gillespie was red carded after twice being shown yellow, and whose prop Connor Hogg and skipper Gregor Young did time in the bin. Jed, for whom scrumhalf Sean Goodfellow showed genuine fight, also suffered through rugby’s ridiculous laws which deems a penalty should be awarded when a scrum goes backwards.
Hawks led 18-0 at half-time through tries by forwards Stephen Leckey and the admirable Grant Stewart and then added touchdowns from Sam Yawayawa, Paddy Boyer, Bobby Beattie and a penalty try.
