I would feel a little less depressed about the way the EU referendum has divided our community if Brexiteers like Andrew Gray, in his letter of 5 May, had had the grace to say that “the winning side” was 38 per cent of the UK electorate, not “the British public” or “the British people”. Can he assure me that even the majority of them included the European Customs Union in what they wanted to leave? Polls suggest that businesses and a large majority of people want to stick with what we have, not rely on a prospectiv­e “deal”.
