Shameful cause

-

Darren Mcgarvey (Perspective, 8 May) states in relation to support for independence, “And even if we lose again, Scotland will be a better place for having us.” Only those who relish the thought of separating Scotland from the United Kingdom will believe that events since they lost the 2014 referendum have made Scotland a “better place”. Mr Salmond and Ms Sturgeon have clearly enjoyed creating division and disharmony amongst families, friends and businesses which, in my opinion, will be irreversible. Scotland is a changed land, it has been split down the middle and the dreadful, purile, hurtful postings on social media do nothing to create harmony.

It is clear that the SNP fixation with independence has resulted in all aspects of government for the people taking second place – Nicola Sturgeon stated in September 2016 that nothing was more important than independence and we witness this on a daily basis to our detriment.

Perhaps had Mr Salmond and Ms Sturgeon worked for the good of Scotland as opposed to following a devisive, angry, blame culture, the result in 2014 might have been different. As it is, there has been huge damage to our country but the silent majority will triumph again in any further referendum – we don’t have to march, shout and wave flags. Mr Mcgarvey speaks in his article of “blind patriotism or anti-english sentiment.” That sums up the independence cause – shameful.
