Italian connection: Exhibition reveals glimpse into Venetian life in the 18th century
The final adjustments are made to a series of artworks going on show in the Canaletto and the Art of Venice exhibition, which opens today in the Queen’s Gallery at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. The exhibition takes viewers on a journey from quayside houses and workshops on the Grand Canal’s upper reaches to the bustling festivities of a regatta and Ascension Day celebrations around St Mark’s Square. Artist Giovanni Antonio Canal, better known as Canaletto, brilliantly captures the effects of light on stone and water, and fills each work with a snapshot of 18th-century Venetian daily life.
