Rooney poised to leave Everton after agreeing £12.5m deal with DC United

Wayne Rooney has agreed a “deal in principle” to join Major League Soccer club DC United, according to reports.

It has been suggested a £12.5 million deal has been agreed by which the 32-year-old could leave his boyhood club, Everton, only 12 months after rejoining them from Manchester United last summer.

Reports claim Rooney has been offered a contract until the end of the 2020 season, although the MLS transfer window does not open until July.

However, it has also been suggested that uncertainty over manager Sam Allardyce’s position means Rooney could yet stay at Goodison Park.

0 Wayne Rooney: Frustrated. Manchester United’s record goalscorer to see out the final year of his contract with Everton next season. “There have been rumours about Wayne going abroad, China or America. It would have to be massive for him to want to leave Everton,” the Toffees boss told TALKSPORT.

Allardyce and Rooney have had their differences and the player’s show of dissent when substituted in April’s Merseyside derby resulted in clearthe-air talks between the pair.

Rooney is the club’s top scorer this season with 11 goals but, as an indicator of where he is and the club’s form is, he has not scored since 18 December.

Allardyce has played him in a midfield role in the second half of the season in an attempt to inject some creativity into the team but that has impacted on the player’s personal form and led to growing frustration.

Neither Everton nor Rooney’s agents were available for comment, while sources at DC United said they did not comment on player speculation. Scotland’s manager of the year, Jack Ross, has been given permission by St Mirren to speak to Ipswich Town who are seeking a replacement for former manager Mick Mccarthy.

Ross, 41, who previously managed Alloa Athletic, has found himself in demand after leading the Paisley club to the Ladbrokes Championship title, which they won by 12 points, only 18 months after taking the reins when the club were rock bottom of the table.

Ross, who was recently linked with Charlton Athletic and declined the opportunity of a move to Barnsley after being interviewed by the South Yorkshire club in February, had said that he would only move from St Mirren for a job which “felt better”.

Mccarthy left Ipswich on 11 April with four matches of their league campaign remaining. The East Anglia club eventually finished in 12th place in the Sky Bet Championship.
