Brabham returns with £1m 700bhp racer
The legendary Brabham name has been resurrected with the unveiling of the Brabham Automotive BT62. Building on a 70-year racing pedigree, the Brabham BT62 continues the legendary ‘BT’ naming convention established by founders Jack Brabham and Ron Tauranac in the 1960s and honours the legacy of the marque’s greatest and most memorable cars. The BT62 is a pure track car which the company says is designed from the ground up to bear acer that challenges drivers and demands more from them. The 972kg BT62 uses a mid-mounted 5.4-litre V8 developed by Brabham and producing 700bhp and 492lb/ft of torque. Only 70 examples will be built, the first 35 of which will be liveried in tribute to each Brabham’s thirty-five Formula 1 Grand Prix victories. Each will cost £1 million plus local taxes. Jack Brabham began racing in 1948 and in the 1960s began to build racing cars. He is the only driver to win an F1 championship in a car of his own construction and built a reputation for producing high-quality race-winning cars for his customers. Speaking at the unveiling of the car, managing director, David Brabham said: “It’s with great pride that I honour and continue my father’s legacy in revealing the next chapter in the evolving Brabham story. “The team we have in place, and the vision it shares, provides a solid platform for Brabham Automotive to execute its long-term business strategy. Our first step to deliver on that strategy is the Brabham BT62, a car truly worthy of carrying the iconic Brabham name.”
