Pulpit politics
Joyce Mcmillan once again strikes the right note in her article “The right-wing myth that life is not about politics” (Perspective, 11 May).
In referring particularly to Trump, Kim Jong Un, Netanyahu and Putin she suggests that “these men are confident of living in an age of unreason, where their lies and manipulations will triumph, and truth, compassion, common sense and justice will not stand a chance.” I leave it to readers to decide whether to judge, for instance, Boris Johnson, upon whose shoulders the truth sits so lightly, in the same light.
However I would extend her condemnation to embrace those who promote that other closely related right-wing myth that politics should be kept out of the pulpit. After all, we who sit in the pews are called to share God’s passion for the world and the consequent commitment of Jesus as he encouraged us to “open the eyes of the blind and to set free the captives”.
