MP bids to ban cash machine charges
New legislation banning ATM charges is being brought forward at Westminster in a bid to stop Britons from “sleepwalking” into a situation where they have to pay to access their own cash.
Scottish Labour MP Ged Killen is introducing a Ten Minute Rule Bill that would outlaw cash machine charges.
His Banking (Cash Machine Charges and Financial Inclusion) Bill already has support from MPS from the three largest parties at Westminster: the Conservatives, Labour and the SNP.
If passed, it would introduce a legal requirement for free access to cash – either through ATMS or by other means – where there is a demand for it.
This would be established via a review of the ATM network by the Payment Systems Regulator.
