Falcons swoop for Sharif

Derbyshire have signed Scotland bowler Safyaan Sharif for this summer’s limited overs competitions.

The Glenrothes player was being monitored by several counties after his impressive displays for Scotland.

Sharif, 26, was leading wicket-taker at the World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe earlier this year with 17 victims at an average of 13.94.

He said: “I’m delighted to be joining Derbyshire.

“The club has a talented group of fast bowlers, some with international experience, so hopefully I can learn from them but also make a difference on the field.”

Derbyshire’s cricket advisor Kim Barnett added: “Sharif is a talented quick bowler and he showed this winter with Scotland that he has the ability to take wickets and perform to a high standard.

“Sharif will join us for our white ball competitions providing additional strength to our attack, while also giving him exposure to county cricket.”

He could go straight into the Derbyshire Falcons squad for their Royal London One-day Cup opener against Warwickshire at Edgbaston tomorrow.
