Bercow ‘called Leadsom a stupid woman’

No10 condemns reports about Speaker’s tirade aimed at minister

Theresa May regards Speaker John Bercow’s alleged attack on a senior minister as a “stupid woman” as “unacceptable”, Downing Street has said.

Mr Bercow is said to have called the Leader of the House Andrea Leadsom “f ****** useless” in an aside in the Commons chamber on Wednesday.

A No 10 spokeswoman said: “We have seen the alleged remarks. Clearly the Prime Minister thinks they are unacceptable. If an official complaint is made it should be properly investigated.”

A Westminster source said there were “no plans” for Mrs Leadsom to complain “at the moment”.

Mrs Leadsom said: “I am focused on ensuring that anyone who is bullied or treated unfairly in Parliament is able to come forward and have their concerns and complaints dealt with in a rigorous and fair manner.”

Mr Bercow is said to have made the comments in a muttered aside after berating Mrs Leadsom for the way ministers were conducting gov- ernment business. Mrs Leadsom was reported not to have heard the comment, but MPS who claimed to have caught his remarks were said to be outraged.

The Speaker’s office acknowledged “strong and differing views” had been expressed in the chamber on what it said had been an “unusual and controversial day” in Parliament.

However, it insisted that Mr Bercow treated MPS with respect while seeking to facilitate the work of the House.

Mrs May’s intervention will add to the pressure on the Speaker who is facing calls to resign over allegations of bullying staff who worked for him.

The latest flare-up is said to have occurred on Wednesday during a point of order following Prime Minister’s Questions.

With Ms Leadsom still sitting on the front bench, Mr Bercow strongly criticised ministers for scheduling a government statement on an opposition day, taking time away from a Labour debate on the Grenfell Tower fire. One unnamed MP who caught Mr Bercow’s aside said: “He said ‘stupid woman’ and went on to say either ‘f ****** useless or f ****** outrageous’, but I am clear that the words ‘stupid woman’ were said, and I am clear that the word ‘useless’ was said. I thought what I was witnessing was entirely outrageous.”

In a statement, the Speaker’s office said: “Wednesday was an unusual and controversial day in how business was handled in the House by the government and some strong and differing views were expressed on all sides on the subject.”
