Farewell Finn /Scarlets end Glasgow’s season

- writes Duncan Smith.

Glasgowcoachdave Rennie refused to blame his side’s three-week break after they slumped to a 28-13 defeat by Scarlets in last night’s Guinness Pro14 semi-final at Scotstoun,

The Warriors, who hadn’t played since the last weekend of April, were brushed aside by the reigning champions, who will now face either Leinster or Munster in Dublin next Saturday looking to retain their title.

“We won’t offer excuses around that. We had a really good preparation,” said Rennie when asked about the long lay-off leading into such a big game.

He also played down the late loss of star full-back Stuart Hogg, who pulled out hours before kick-off due to illness.

“He’s got some food poisoning or something,” explained the coach. “He started spewing just after lunch. He got an injection, went out and tried to run but didn’t have anything in the tank.

“We had Ruaridh Jackson come in, who has been excellent for us, and Lee Jones coming out of the stand [on to the bench]. So that’s a handy couple of replacements.”

Stand-off Finn Russell’s home farewell became his last game for the club as Glasgow trailed 21-3 at half-time to a confident Welsh side.

“We didn’t fire many shots in the first half, gave away too many penalties,” said Rennie.

“We felt we could get the tempo up and run them off their feet [after the break] but we turned the ball over too much.”
