Plane crash firm subject of ‘serious complaints’

- By MICHAEL WEISSENSTEIN

The owner of a plane that crashed in Havana, killing 110, was barred from Guyanese airspace last year after crews were found to be overloading luggage, it has been claimed.

Guyanese Civil Aviation director Egbert Field revealed one of two serious complaints against Mexican charter firm Damojh in the last decade.

Honduran low-cost airline Easysky was renting the 39-year-old Boeing 737 in a “wet lease” deal from Damojh when it crashed on Friday.

Witnesses reported an engine on fire and the jet veering on take-off to the eastern Cuban city of Holguin before crashing into a field just after noon.

Mexico’s National Civil Aviation Authority vowed to carry out an operational audit of Damojh.

Its remit will be to ascertain whether the Mexico City company’s “current operating conditions continue meeting regulations”.

The agency will also help to collect information for the investigation into the crash.
