Brexit fears

-

Nothing to do with the SNP, of course. It’s the Tories at Westminster. Except, as the article makes clear, it isn’t! It’s our own Scottish “government” which is doing this to councils. And has been doing it for years.

Scotspat The SNP and the councils they control should start trying to generate more income rather than just spending money and income, way behind most of their English counterparts in that regard. Increasing taxes isn’t the answer either, counter productive.

Peter Mcgrouther Just wait until Scotland gets independence and starts its own currency pegged at the rates of sterling. Then the currency speculators move in and decide the Scotpound is really only worth 80p (most probably less) of the sterling pound. Then you’ll see what austerity Greek style means.

Gregor Mcgregor And yet the baby boxes, Gaelic road signs and free education for foreign students continue to flow like water.

Norton Lux But they’ve just managed to find £1 billion a year for childcare for everyone, regardless of if they need it. Plus £100 million a year to fund EU student fees AFTER we’ve left the EU.

Common Sensei Money for a failed airport. Money to slap some Gaelic words on police cars. Money to send abroad in addition to the UK’S foreign aid budget. Money to provide free sanitary towels at Holyrood. Aye, austerity right enough.

Disc Less Meaningless survey designed to get the answer the rightwingers want. Even many unionists aren’t happy with the constitutional setup: certainly not those Laboursupporting unionists who see the need for reform of Great Britain. And probably not those Brexit-loving Tories calling for the House of Lords to be abolished or in favour of an English parliament.

Stuartxfx Concerned about Brexit? They should be. It is an absolute shambles.

Cagey It is only a shambles because the losing side won’t accept they lost and continue to undermine the UK position.

banjulbert ruk is Scotland’s biggest trading partner. Responding to Brexit by breaking away from our biggest trading partner makes no sense. Especially as the relationship our biggest trading partner will have with the EU after Brexit isn’t known. One will affect the other. And ultimately a separate Scotland.

Graeme Paul We don’t need polls to remind us Scotland is a union country, we know that already. And yes, Brexit is a worry, even for the majority who voted for it, but that’s what growth and change is about, fear. We will overcome the fear and we will make it work, let’s just get the show on the road. A strong SNP leader would have punted Alex Salmond to the Lords to keep him close but also out the way.

Mike Lowery Yes, the House of Lords is anachronistic and bloated in numbers but it is an often effective check and balance on the House of Commons. While it is the big issues like defiance over Brexit that gets the attention, in most of its work it goes about its business and catches errors and omissions in new legislation.

Sandy Stewart The Lords has no power over the Commons. The Lords can refuse to pass or demand changes in legislation and the Commons can say ‘Thank you’ and ignore them.
