0 Joanna Cherry attended the General Assembly “You don’t have to be a Christian to respect the advice of the Church of Scotland,” an MP has said.

Joanna Cherry, QC, SNP MP for Edinburgh South West, was speaking out after the Very Rev Dr Derek Browning, the previous Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland expressed frustration that some organisations appeared to find it difficult to work with the Kirk because they “don’t do God”.

Ms Cherry, a Christian, said: “Governments, charities and other groups should work in partnership with the Church you don’t have to be a Christian or ‘do God’ in order to do that.”

She added: “You can be an atheist or an agnostic and still acknowledge the good work that the Church does in society.” Ms Cherry attended the General Assembly for the report of the Church and Society Council, the political and social affairs wing of the Kirk.

She was invited to attend by the Kirk’s QC, Laura Dunlop, who was her devil master when she trained to be an advocate, and hosted by Rev Michael Mair, minister of St David’s Church in Broomhouse, in her constituency.
