Spirit of success
John Foster should be applauded, not only for shooting a hole-in-one at Trump Turnberry, but for doing so with a sight impairment (your report, 23 May). We are passionate that people with a sight impairment don’t allow challenges to get in their way, and Mr Foster is a wonderful example, in that living with the condition isn’t preventing him from pursuing a hobby.
For other blind, or partially sighted Scots who perhaps live alone, the importance of friends and befriending cannot be under estimated – it helps people embrace an independent life and avoid social exclusion. Just last Friday, we watched a former ex-airman training with colleagues towards abseiling down the Forth Bridge next month.
Garry Cowan, who lost his sight through contracting chicken pox as an adult, and now trains with the GB Paralympic climbing team, shows what can be achieved from having a fighting spirit and a real determination – it fuels the desire to succeed. CARL HODSON
