Shohei Ohtani was in inspirational form as the Los Angeles Angels staged a remarkable 11th-hour comeback to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4. The Japanese newcomer hit a two-run single and Andrelton Simmons emulated it to lift the Angels clear in the ninth inning. Martin Maldonado singled on a fly ball in the sixth to help get Los Angeles on the scoreboard, although another disappointing night for the Angels threatened until the late comeback. Kendrys Morales hit an RBI double off Blake Parker to bring Toronto within a point, but the pitcher struck out Justin Smoak to close out the game. There were more ninth-inning dramatics in Boston’s clash with the Tampa Bay Rays, which saw the Red Sox claim a 4-1 triumph for their fourth victory in a row. Tied 1-1 at the outset, Xander Bogaerts then doubled to drive in JD Martinez, before Eduardo Nunez sacrificed to see Bogaerts home.
