Sunderland poised to unveil Ross as manager

- By ALAN PATTULLO

Sunderland are expected to confirm Jack Ross as their new manager today after a delay yesterday sparked rumours his move from St Mirren had hit a snag.

The 41-year-old, who has also held informal talks with managerless Ipswich Town, should be unveiled on Wearside later today.

Sunderland are understood to have agreed to meet the compensation figure St Mirren are due as per Ross’s latest contract, signed at the start of the last season.

Sunderland had hoped to hand their long-suffering fans something to cheer following two successive relegations by confirming Ross’s capture yesterday.

The delay caused hopes to rise in Paisley that Ross, who guided St Mirren into the Premier League, might in fact be staying at the 2020 stadium.

St Mirren released a statement on Wednesday saying they had “reluctantly” agreed to allow Sunderland permission to speak to their manager.

The Wearside club – under new owners following businessman Stewart Donald’s buy-out – are still intent on securing Ross as their manager. The former defender has already spent time in the north-east of England during an ill-fated spell at Hartlepool United in 2004-05.
