The key guidelines on festival staff
1 The council expects organisations to pay no less than the UK government national living wage level for those aged 25 and over, irrespective of age (currently £7.83 per hour). 2 For workers 18 and over, when they are working for more than than six hours they should get 20 minutes rest, 11 consecutive hours rest in each 24-hour period and uninterrupted rest of not less than 24 hours in each seven-day period. For workers aged 16 and over but under 18, when they are working for more than 4.5 hours they should get 30 minutes rest, 12 consecutive hours rest in in each 24-hour period, and uninterrupted rest of not less than 48 hours in each 7-day period. 3 Organisations to provide a minimum of 24 hours’ notice where work needs to be undertaken. This notice is reciprocal in that workers are also asked to provide 24 hours’ notice if they are unable or unwilling to work. 4 The council expects festival organisations to commit protecting its staff from all forms of harassment and discrimination, including sexual harassment and discriminatory behaviour. 5 The council expects festival organisations to protect staff from unpaid trial shifts. 6 The council encourages festival organisers to ensure tips are distributed fairly and equally between staff who have contributed to the provision of the service. Tips should not be used to replace or top up wages.
