Historic new islands powers backed
Historic new powers are to be handed to Scotland’s islands under new laws passed at Holyrood.
The Islands Bill was backed unanimously last night and will mean a forthcoming National Islands Plan will include specific reference to lifeline transport links, broad- band and digital connectively, as well as the need to address fuel poverty.
Island authorities can also apply for more powers and responsibilities in future.
Orkney Islands Council leader James Stockan said: “I am delighted that the Scottish Government and MSPS from other parties have listened to our case and have ensured that this will be fit-for-purpose legislation that delivers transformational support for island communities for many years to come.”
Orkney will also get greater say in marine planning matters affecting its waters.
