Construction materials group Breedon has acquired Blinkbonny Quarry in the Borders for an undisclosed sum, it was announced yesterday.

Blinkbonny operates a quarry and ready-mixed concrete plant near Kelso employing 14 people.

The deal provides Breedon with its first quarry in the region, with some 2.8 million tonnes of basalt hard rock reserves and resources and a fleet of ready-mixed concrete mixers and tippers together with a volumetric concrete mixer.

Alan Mackenzie, managing director of Breedon Northern, said: “Blinkbonny gives us a great opportunity to establish a presence in the Scottish Borders, through a business with long-term mineral reserves and resources.”

He added: “It is well invested, with modern plant and machinery, and has established an excellent reputation for quality and service among its customers in the surrounding area.”
