Scots pipped by Ireland in first Test
Scotland women lost the first Test 1-0 to Ireland at Glasgow Green but interim head coach Neil Menzies will take heart from his inexperienced squad’s promising display against a side in the final throes of preparation for next month’s World Cup.
This was Menzies’ first game in charge following the recent departure of Gordon Shepherd and his charges only succumbed to the winning goal five minutes from the end.
The Scots comfortably held their own in the first half despite Ireland having most of the possession.
The Scots had a couple of chances after the interval, with Grove Menzieshill striker Sarah Jamieson going close.
The Irish pressed for the winner in the final quarter and only a great save by keeper Lucy Camlin diving to her right preserved the clean sheet.
But with five minutes left, the Irish finally took the lead when Naomi Carroll’s diving deflection at a penalty corner rolled over the line despite the desperate attempts to keep it out.
