Bridge attack ‘no surrender’ pledge

- By ANGUS HOWARTH

A service to mark the one-year anniversary of those murdered in the London Bridge terror attack has been held at Southwark Cathedral.

Eight died and 48 were injured by three men who drove into pedestrians then stabbed people in Borough Market.

A 700-strong congregation yesterday held a minute’s silence in the cathedral before readings from Dame Eileen Sills, the chief nurse at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, and local councillor Adele Morris.

A floral wreath from Prime Minister Theresa May laid at the Southwark Needle read: “We will never forget those who died and will never surrender to hatred and division.”

London mayor Sadiq Khan’s tribute read: “Our city will never forget you.

“We stand united against terrorism and together in remembering the innocent lives lost.”

Bishop of Southwark Christopher Chessun said: “Our hearts go out today to those who grieve the loss of colleagues, relatives and friends. While the very worst was happening, the best of the human spirit was shining brightly.”

Family members of those killed and emergency service figures also attended the commemoration. An olive tree will be planted later using compost from floral tributes.
