Speak for yourself

You report (2 June) that a member of the Question Time TV audience last week was described as a “hero” for asking viewers not to regard Perth, the Fair City, and “quite Tory,” she said, as representative of Scotland.

Scottish people are, she claimed, angered by the Scottish nation’s politicians not being involved in the Brexit negotiations and, by implication, angered by Brexit itself.

If an SNP voter, she should note that her party’s support is substantially falling, as are its donations from supporters. Whether or not one agrees with its policies, it cannot be fairly said to represent Scotland as a whole.

The Brexit negotiations are being conducted on behalf of the UK, after a fair majority in the referendum in 2016 voted to leave the EU. Therefore, her opinion cannot be described as representative of Scotland, nor can she be a “hero,” rather, simply, an SNP voter who supports its policy.
