Time in hand: ‘Slave clock’ on display at Glasgow School of Art to mark Charles Rennie Mackintosh anniversary
Flora Clare Robson, a second year fine art student and tour guide at the Mackintosh Furniture Gallery, with a ‘slave clock’ made for a Glasgow School of Art studio dating back to 1910. Made from stained wood with stencilled numerals as part of his holistic design for the GSA, Mackintosh produced designs for a suite of clocks. These ran on a synchronome system where a central master clock controlled the many studio ‘slave clocks’ by means of a series of electrical pulses. Today marks the 150th anniversary of Macintosh’s birth.
