Student nurse wins fight against deportation

- By PAUL WARD

student nurse who moved to the UK almost a decade ago and carried the Commonwealth Games baton ahead of Glasgow 2014 has won a fight against deportation.

Denzel Darku, 23, moved from Ghana aged 14 and has served in the Scottish Youth Parliament.

He was threatened with deportation but has now been granted permanent residence.

Mr Darku said: “I’m still in shock, I still don’t know how to react because it’s been a long time coming.”

“For over two years I’ve been in limbo so I am pleased and happy that at least I can now move on with my life and go back to uni and get back to my studies.

“It gives me a chance to still be in a place where I now call home.”

His case was raised by polia ticians and earlier this week Home Secretary Sajid Javid said he was “sympathetic” to Mr Darku’s case.

A Home Office spokesman confirmed yesterday residence had been granted after a review of the case.

He said: “We have contacted Mr Darku’s legal representatives today to advise that, following reconsideration of his case, his application for permanent residence has been granted.”
