In Scotland’s absence, SNP MP Ian Blackford’s support of Peru over England in the World Cup signals an ambiguous message to those on the extremities of the nationalist movement. (Scotsman, 7 June).
Mr Blackford’s enthusiasm for a South American football team, their play and attitude may be genuinely heartfelt. Yet he spends a significant amount of time in England and, one presumes, has many English friends and acquaintances.
The SNP administration has long insisted its version of nationalism is civic and joyous not divisive nor racially based.
If Mr Blackford and others who comprise the SNP establishment want to exemplify the kind of nationalism they purport to represent, they would be advised to support our closest neighbours, with whom we are inextricably tied socially, culturally and economically.
