Protests in Vietnam over new zones

- By JOLENE CAMPBELL

Protests have broken out in Vietnam against plans for new economic zones, fuelled by fears that Chinese investors will dominate the areas.

According to police reports, more than a dozen people were detained in the capital Hanoi and demonstrations stopped in other cities.

Last year the government proposed a law that would give foreign investors a 99-year lease on Vietnamese land in an bid to promote growth in target areas. The protesters fear the communist government will award Chinese investors leases across the north-east, south-east and south-west of the country.

Demonstrators are also against a cyber security bill, scheduled for a vote on 12 June. Human Rights Watch say it would give the government broad powers quash dissent online.
