May stands by G7 allies after Trump outburst
Theresa May has said the UK “fully intends to honour” its commitments at the G7 after Donald Trump lashed out at his closest allies.
In a statement to MPS, Mrs May expressed her “deep disappointment” at the “unjustified” imposition of tariffs on American imports of European steel and aluminium.
While making no direct criticism of the US President, the Prime Minister acknowledged that the G7 summit in Canada had been “difficult”. Shortly after the summit ended on Saturday, Mr Trump announced on Twitter that he was ordering officials not to endorse a communiquéagreedhoursearlier by the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.
He accused summit host Justin Trudeau of making “false statements” and called the Canadian premier “weak”.
Mrs May’s official spokesman added: “We would hope that the US would similarly honour the commitments that they have made.”
