Pavement and double parking to be banned
Parking on pavements and double parking is set to be outlawed by new legislation unveiled at Holyrood.
The Transport (Scotland) Bill will also give local authorities powers to enforce the ban with fixed penalty notices handed out by parking attendants.
The move was welcomed by campaigners, but there were warnings that the new measures would only solve the problem of inconsiderate parking if there were enough attendants and the fines were stiff enough.
Stuart Hay, director of Living Streets Scotland, hailed the new law as a “major milestone” which would make Scotland the only part of the UK to have clear laws on footway parking. He said: “This is the beginning of the end for footway parking in Scotland.”
