Telfer reunited with Mckinnon as midfielder signs on at Cappielow

New Morton manager Ray Mckinnon has completed the signing of his third recruit with former Rangers and Dundee United midfielder Charlie Telfer joining Chris Millar and Gregor Buchanan at Cappielow.

Telfer has agreed a one-year contract after returning to Scotland following a spell with Dutch second-tier side Almere City and the 22-year-old will be teaming up with Mckinnon for a second time after the pair worked together at Tannadice.

Telfer started his career at Ibrox, but he headed to Tayside in 2014 after a £200,000 development fee was set by an independent tribunal.

The midfielder featured in more than 70 games for United and also had a loan spell at Livingston before heading to the Netherlands last summer.

Mckinnon said: “We are absolutely delighted to have Charlie on board as he is a top-class football player, and a fantastic professional, who I know very well from my time at Dundee United. He is a ball player who likes to keep possession and pass and that fitted the criteria of what we wanted to do perfectly.

“He then went to Holland for a new experience but we knew his contract was coming up and we’d been in contact over the last three or four weeks.

“I am thrilled to have been able to entice him to Morton especially as there were two or three other clubs interested.

“The way we had worked together previously probably swung it in our favour. He’ll be a great addition to the Mor- ton squad.” Mckinnon is also lining up his fourth signing with former Ross County, St Johnstone and Partick Thistle full-back Gary Miller set to join the club after being released by Plymouth.

The 31-year-old defender, who played 56 games for the Pilgrims over the last two seasons, is expected to sign on with the Greenock men this week. He will take the place of Michael Doyle in Mckinnon’s squad after the right-back advised that he would not be returning to the club.
