Morvern

- Robin Mckelvie

1pm

Head for lunch straight off the Calmac ferry in Lochaline. The White House (www. thewhitehouserestaurant.co.uk) is a legendary restaurant offering ultra fresh local produce, such as Morvern venison and seafood cooked with creative flair.

4pm

Check into Caorann (from £125, www. rahoy-estate.com/caorann.html), a luxurious lodge, pictured, on the beautiful Rahoy Estate, with its epic glass gable wall overlooking Loch Teacuis and a wood burning stove.

6pm

Amble around the loch to the site of the old dun that once guarded against marauding Viking longships. Look out for seals and otters.

8pm

Cook up the fresh Atlantic seafood bounty you picked up from the fishmonger on the Oban pier, or the estate venison you’ve arranged to have waiting in Caorann.

Saturday, 9am

If you’ve got the experience and gear snake up through the boggy hillsides on long forgotten trails to the 452m high Beinn Ghormaig. The views over Ardnamurchan towards the Small Isles and Skye are breathtaking.

Midday

Drive to the cosy wee Boathouse Bistro (www.kingairloch.co.uk). This bright dining room hangs over the water, with local smoked meats and Morvern landed fish starring. Finish off with homemade ice cream.

3pm

On the way back stop for a walk to Aoineadh Mor. Morvern is a manmade wilderness due to the Highland Clearances that ravaged through the glens here. This ruined township is a haunting legacy, with an evocative audio station telling the story of the evicted villagers.

8pm

The Lochaline Hotel (www. lochalinehotel.co.uk) offers unpretentious pub style fare. Enjoy a scenic drive back to Rahoy looking out for the Northern Lights as you go.

Sunday, 9am

Ease your walking bashed muscles in the bath with a view at Caorann, which stares west right down Loch Teacuis as its meanders off in search of the Atlantic. ■ You will need a car or a bike to explore the Morvern Peninsula. Holiday Autos (www.holidayautos.com) can arrange car hire from a number of locations. Calmac (www.calmac. co.uk) ferries serve Mull from Oban, where you can connect from Fishnish to Lochaline on Morvern.
