Deal or no deal
The findings of Dr Daniela Sime of Strathclyde University regarding the way bullying and racism has escalated since Brexit points to the disturbing way that Bexit has affected our nation. Brexiteer politicians led the way.
Their assertion that the Brexit divorce would be “the easiest negotiations ever’ was based on a belief that the EU would abandon its values and give us the same deal after divorce that we had before –
call it a “divorceless divorce”.
If a spouse insisted that after a divorce the other partner must stay married, we would get it – yes that’s bullying. Politics being more complicated is a cause of people being in denial. And so the government insists it will get a deal, while Europe more realistically prepares for a no-deal Brexit.
Disingenuously, we are told that whatever happens it will be painless, but in reality when negotiations collapse we will be left with just one thing we can enjoy – fury and resentment against Europe.
