The inquiry explained

- CATRIONA AITKEN

The Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry is investigating the abuse of children in care dating back decades.

Led by judge Lady Smith, it is hearing evidence relating to children’s homes, boarding schools and healthcare establishments.

More than 70 institutions are being investigated, including establishments run by care providers such as Quarriers, Aberlour and Barnardo’s, and private schools such as Fettes, Gordonstoun and Loretto.

Phase two of the inquiry began earlier this year and is expected to continue throughout the summer.

It is looking at alleged abuse in four children’s homes run by the Sisters of Nazareth, a Catholic order.

The inquiry, which has cost nearly £14 million to date, had been due to deliver its final report next year but following a request from Lady Smith, the Scottish Government last week agreed to alter the remit so that it will conclude “as soon as reasonably practicable”. In her final report, Lady Smith will make a series of recommendations for Scottish Government ministers including whether further changes are needed to protect children in care from abuse in future.
