Bushtucker cash paid for my flat,

● Former Scottish Labour leader says she regrets the fall-out from show but not the experience or life after stepping down

- By GEORGE MAIR

£7,500 has gone to four different charities so far, out of the money that I generated.

“My fee overall was £70,000 so you get a flavour within that of tax and charity and all the rest of it. I walked away with £30,000 or £40,000 at least, but we’re still trying to work out the exact amount.”

Ms Dugdale, 36, said her 12 days on the show were a “phenomenal experience” which had made for a great conversational ice-breaker.

But she admitted she does still have regrets, due to the effect her actions had on her partner, Jenny Gilruth, and on Richard Leonard, at the time the newly installed leader of the Scottish Labour Party.

She said: “I was under no illusion that it would be controversial and that it would leave me forever sort of categorised as a reality TV wannabe or whatever, but on balance for me the advantages of doing it were greater than the disadvantages. I do have regrets about it. I deeply regret the impact it had both on Jenny and the Labour Party – the way that it broke, the way that it came out was hugely damaging for Richard Leonard, the new leader of the Labour Party. That wasn’t done maliciously by me. Somebody somewhere leaked it and it had a terrible impact on his first few days as leader, and I’ve apologised for that.

“Equally, sending journalists and TV crews to Jenny’s front door wasn’t a particularly nice experience for her.”

She revealed how she quit the leadership of the Scottish Labour Party partly because it made her dislike herself. She succeeded Jim Murphy as leader of the party in Scotland in August 2015, but resigned last year after just over two years in office.

She said: “I got very comfortable, quickly, with criticism from people directly around you. There’s undoubtedly occasions when I look back now and think, ‘I didn’t particularly like myself that day’ – I didn’t like who I was or what I was becoming – and that was a small part of why I resigned.”

Ms Dugdale, MSP for Lothian since 2011, said she wanted to remain in frontline politics, saying: “I want to very much, so I fully intend to stand again in 2021.”

She described her relationship with SNP MSP Jenny Gilruth, saying: “I guess it is a bit of a Romeo and Juliet story in that sense of two different tribes, two Juliets in that sense, but the idea of two tribes clashing.”

Kezia Dugdale said she isn’t sure how much money she made from I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!
